Ross Hollow

Ross Hollow is a folk, rock and Americana project based in Asheville, North Carolina, started in 2017 by songwriter and engineer Stuart Ross Johnson-Kwochka. It began as a solo act, grew into a trio and then a full band while he was living in Indianapolis, Indiana, and has since returned to a largely solo operation with vocals from Annalee Johnson-Kwochka and rotating guest musicians. Johnson-Kwochka traces the mix of regional influences to the places he has lived: Spanish folk and country music from a New Mexico childhood, Appalachian gospel and bluegrass from North Carolina, and heartland rock and blues from Indiana. The recent work leans acoustic, built on fingerpicked guitar, warm harmony and imagery drawn from the Blue Ridge Mountains. Holler Till We're Blue, released in January 2025, collects six new acoustic songs and rearrangements of older material, with Alex Travers on fiddle and Annalee Johnson-Kwochka on additional vocals; he described it at the time as half of a full-length to come. That record arrived in October 2025 as In The Dimming, his fourth full-length, an eleven-song set written and rearranged in 2023 after he moved back to western North Carolina, where he grew up, and framed around memory, grief and transformation. Cellist Ashlee Booth appears on five tracks, Fancy Marie sings on Appalachian Strong and Travers returns on fiddle, while Johnson-Kwochka plays guitar, bass and percussion and handles the mixing and mastering himself.
