Ron Pope

Ron Pope is an American singer-songwriter, born in 1983 in Newark, New Jersey, raised in Marietta, Georgia, and now based in Nashville, working in Americana and roots-leaning rock. He spent two years at Rutgers University playing baseball before a career-ending injury sent him to New York University in 2003 to study music. In New York he co-founded the band The District with Zach Berkman, Paul Hammer and others, recording three albums with the group and briefly reuniting it in 2010. With Berkman he also wrote A Drop in the Ocean in 2007, a ballad that spread through file sharing and streaming rather than radio and that has since passed a billion streams, earning platinum certification in the United States and double platinum in Sweden. A 2009 deal with Universal Republic followed, but Pope returned to independence, co-founding Brooklyn Basement Records with his wife Blair Clark and releasing his own catalogue through the label. That catalogue includes Calling Off the Dogs (2014), the band-credited Ron Pope and the Nighthawks (2016), Work (2017), Bone Structure (2020), Inside Voices (2023) and American Man, American Music (2025). The last of those, ten songs written alone, draws on a childhood spent with teenage parents, relatives' households and food insecurity, and on the touring years that gave him a working definition of home. Alongside his own records Pope writes and produces for other artists and speaks publicly about how independent musicians can build a career outside the major-label system. He tours steadily as a headliner in theaters, listening rooms and winery venues, playing rooms such as City Winery St. Louis, the Harvester Performance Center in Rocky Mount, Virginia, and Songbirds in Chattanooga.
