River Shook

River Shook is an alt-country and indie rock singer-songwriter based in Chatham County, North Carolina, born September 15, 1985 in Rochester, New York. Shook is non-binary, uses they/them pronouns, and now asks to be called River rather than the Sarah of the earlier billing. Raised in a fundamentalist Christian household where listening was restricted to classical and worship music, Shook taught themself piano at nine and picked up guitar in high school, moved to North Carolina in 2005, and led an early band, Sarah Shook and the Devil, which released the EP Seven in 2013. Sarah Shook & the Disarmers formed in mid-2014 and issued Sidelong in 2015, later picked up and reissued by Chicago's Bloodshot Records. Years followed in 2018 and drew wide critical praise, landing on multiple year-end lists, and Nightroamer arrived in 2022. Revelations, self-produced and released in 2024 through Abeyance Records and Thirty Tigers, was the band's fourth album; the group kept the Sarah Shook & the Disarmers name even after the personal one changed, in part to stay findable to existing listeners. Alongside the band Shook runs the indie rock project Mightmare, whose album Cruel Liars came out on Kill Rock Stars in 2022. A self-titled River Shook record followed on July 10, 2026, recorded with guitarist and producer Blake Tallent, Shook's spouse, and framed around sobriety and starting over. The writing pairs honky-tonk and outlaw-country phrasing with a punk edge and blunt first-person detail, and the live show carries the same directness. Shook is an atheist and an outspoken supporter of LGBTQ and civil rights causes, and shared a 2016 Indy Arts Award for community activism.
