Rick Faris Band

bluegrass

Rick Faris is a bluegrass guitarist, singer, songwriter and guitar builder. He grew up in the Ozarks and in Kansas and began performing professionally at seven in the Faris Family band, led by his father Bob Faris, a champion fiddler; the group toured nationally, won SPBGMA awards around 2000, ran its own theater show in Kansas, and disbanded in 2009. Faris then joined Special Consensus, spending eleven years with the band, first on mandolin and later on guitar, recording six albums with it and collecting two Grammy nominations along the way. He signed with Dark Shadow Recording, the Nashville label run by Stephen and Jana Mougin, in 2018 and has released four albums for it: Breaking In Lonesome in 2019, The Next Mountain in 2021, Uncommon Sky in 2023, which features guest turns from Del McCoury and Jerry Douglas, and Life's Parade in 2025. Those records have produced several number-one bluegrass singles and drew SPBGMA and IBMA Song of the Year nominations. He won the IBMA New Artist of the Year award in 2022 and IBMA Songwriter of the Year in 2024, and has been inducted into the Kansas Music Hall of Fame. His touring group, the Rick Faris Band, features Maddie Dalton on upright bass, Henry Burgess on mandolin and Gibson Davis on banjo, and the sets lean on his own songwriting and a clear lead tenor; he also works as a duo and as a solo act. Away from the road, Faris has been building handmade guitars since 2001 and runs Faris Guitar Co. from Owensboro, Kentucky, where he is artist in residence at Kentucky Guitar Works and teaches guitar-building classes. His festival dates include IBMA's World of Bluegrass in Chattanooga, the Jerusalem Ridge Bluegrass Festival in Kentucky and the Oklahoma International Bluegrass Festival in Guthrie.
