Red Wanting Blue is an American rock band formed in Athens, Ohio in 1996 by singer Scott Terry and headquartered in Columbus, Ohio since 1999. The long-running lineup is Terry on vocals, tenor guitar and ukulele, Mark McCullough on bass, Chapman Stick and vocals, Greg Rahm on guitar, keyboards and vocals, Eric Hall on guitar, lap steel, mandolin and vocals, and Dean Anshutz on drums and percussion. The band draws on Americana, folk and alternative country inside a heartland rock frame, and has built its audience almost entirely through touring rather than through radio, which is why American Songwriter has called the group Midwestern rock heroes. Its recordings begin with Velveteen in 1996 and run through The Image Trigger (1998), Model Citizen (2000), Sirens (2001), Souvenirs of City Life (2003), Pride: The Cold Lover (2004), The Warehouse Sessions (2006) and These Magnificent Miles (2008). From the Vanishing Point, released on Fanatic Records in 2012, reached number ten on Billboard's Heatseekers chart, and Little America followed in 2014, reaching number three on Heatseekers and number thirty-one on the Mainstream Rock chart. The band marked its twentieth anniversary with RWB20 Live at Lincoln Theater in 2016 and released The Wanting in 2018. Light It Up, its thirteenth studio album and second for Blue Elan Records, arrived in 2024 and was the first record the band produced itself; Terry has described it as sequenced with intros, outros and interludes so that the songs run as a single journey. Red Wanting Blue performed on the Late Show with David Letterman and VH1's Big Morning Buzz Live in 2012 and has appeared on NPR's Mountain Stage. It remains an independent touring act playing theaters and clubs across the Midwest and East.
