Rebecca Black is an American pop singer from Irvine, California, born in 1997, who first drew attention with the 2011 viral single Friday. The song was recorded for the vanity label ARK Music Factory, reached number 58 on the Billboard Hot 100, and became one of the earliest examples of a track propelled entirely by online mockery; Black has since spoken openly about the depression and harassment that followed. She continued releasing independent singles through the 2010s, including My Moment and Person of Interest in 2011 and Saturday, a collaboration with Dave Days, in 2013. Her reintroduction came in February 2021 with Friday (Remix), produced by Dylan Brady of 100 gecs and featuring Dorian Electra, Big Freedia and 3OH!3, which rebuilt the original as hyperpop and aligned her with that scene. The EP Rebecca Black Was Here followed later in 2021, and her debut album Let Her Burn appeared in 2023 to generally favorable reviews. Her second album, Salvation, was self-released on February 27, 2025, a compact seven-track set she described as deliberately succinct and cohesive, preceded by the singles Trust!, Sugar Water Cyanide and the title track. Its lyrics deal with the impossible standards placed on women in pop, and it uses religious and queer imagery throughout; critical response was divided, with Metacritic aggregating a score of 52. A North American and European headline tour supported the record in March and April 2025. Black came out as queer in 2020 and has become a fixture of dance and club-oriented pop, working as the official after-party DJ for the 2025 American Music Awards and touring as a supporting act on Katy Perry's Lifetimes Tour. A third album, Age of the Exhibitionist, is scheduled for September 2026.
