Rawayana is a Venezuelan band formed in Caracas in 2007 that mixes pop and alternative rock with reggae, funk, electronic and Caribbean styles, a sound the group calls trippy pop. The core lineup is Alberto "Beto" Montenegro on vocals and guitar, Antonio "Tony" Casas on bass and synthesizer, Andrés "Fofo" Story on drums and percussion, and Alejandro "Abeja" Abeijón on guitar and synthesizer, with Orestes Gómez touring alongside them. The band self-released Licencia Para Ser Libre in 2011 and Rawayanaland in 2013 before Trippy Caribbean (2016) broadened its audience and brought a Latin Grammy nomination for Best New Artist. Cuando los acéfalos predominan followed in 2021, addressing the political and economic crisis that pushed much of the band's audience, and eventually the band itself, out of Venezuela. ¿Quién trae las cornetas? arrived in September 2023 on Broccoli Records with guests including Danny Ocean, Monsieur Periné and Servando Primera, and won Best Latin Rock or Alternative Album at the 2025 Grammy Awards, the first such win for a Venezuelan act. The group has also won Latin Grammys for the song Feriado in 2024 and for the Veneka performance in 2025. Veneka, which reclaims a slur historically aimed at Venezuelan women abroad, drew public criticism from President Nicolás Maduro, after which the band canceled its planned Venezuela dates. A 2023 Tiny Desk concert for NPR has been viewed more than eleven million times and became a significant driver of the band's audience in the United States. In 2025 Montenegro and Story joined Li Saumet and José Castillo of Colombia's Bomba Estéreo to form the supergroup Astropical, whose self-titled album of twelve zodiac-themed songs was recorded in Miami and Santa Marta and supported by a joint tour. Rawayana has played Coachella and Lollapalooza and released the album ¿Dónde es el after? in 2026.
