Polyrhythmics is an instrumental band from Seattle, Washington, formed in 2010 around guitarist Ben Bloom and drawn out of the city's underground funk scene. The group works as a seven-piece: Bloom on guitar, Grant Schroff on drums, Nathan Spicer on keyboards, Jason Gray on bass, Scott Morning on trumpet, Elijah Clark on trombone and Art Brown on saxophone and flute. It threads funk, soul, rhythm and blues, psychedelic rock, progressive jazz and Afrobeat through that horn section and layered percussion, moving between brighter, cinematic Fela-influenced writing and darker, more exploratory passages the band describes as psych-funk. Bloom has said the group began as a recording project and became a touring band only after it discovered how strongly audiences responded by dancing, and that the absence of a vocalist makes the room's reaction the main channel of communication back and forth during a set. The catalog now runs to several full-length albums plus EPs and live releases, including Libra Stripes, Fondue Party, Filter System, the concert recording Live From The Get Down and the 2025 album Life from Below, whose tracks include Serpentine and Mayo con Yayo. Adryon de León appears as a guest vocalist on cuts including Circles, Smoke and Mirrors and Got to Be For Something. The band has played festivals including High Sierra, Bumbershoot and the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, tours funk and jam circuits nationally, and released further new material in 2026. Its Portland appearances are at The Get Down, the same room that gave the live album its title.
