Peter Asher

Peter Asher is an English musician, record producer and artist manager, born June 22, 1944 in Willesden, Middlesex. He worked as a child actor from the age of eight, appearing in films including The Planter's Wife (1952) and Isn't Life Wonderful! (1953), before forming the pop duo Peter and Gordon with Gordon Waller while the two were at Westminster School. Their 1964 debut single A World Without Love, a Paul McCartney song issued under the Lennon-McCartney credit, went to number one in both Britain and the United States; the duo took three unrecorded Beatles songs in all, a connection that came through Asher's sister Jane and her relationship with McCartney. Further hits followed with Nobody I Know (1964), I Go to Pieces (1965), True Love Ways (1965), Woman (1966) and Lady Godiva (1966) before the duo wound up in 1968. Asher then became head of A&R at the Beatles' Apple Records, where he signed the then-unknown James Taylor and produced his debut album; when the label faltered he resigned to manage and produce Taylor full time. Across the 1970s and 1980s he produced multi-platinum records for Taylor and for Linda Ronstadt and managed both artists, work central to the sound of Californian soft rock. He won the Grammy Award for Producer of the Year, Non-Classical in 1977 and again in 1989, and was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2015 for services to British music. Since May 2017 he has hosted From Me To You, a weekly series on SiriusXM's Beatles Channel, and since 2018 he has toured a music-and-storytelling show as Peter and Jeremy with Jeremy Clyde of Chad & Jeremy, the format he brings to theatre dates.
