Paul Cauthen

country · americana · alternative country

Paul Cauthen is an American singer-songwriter from Tyler, Texas, working in outlaw-influenced country, gospel-tinged soul and Americana. He grew up in a Church of Christ household where his father led congregational singing, learning to sing unaccompanied hymns before he learned guitar and piano; his maternal grandfather, Jim Paul Cauthen, was a songwriter and gave him his first guitar. He first recorded as half of Sons of Fathers, the duo he formed with David Beck in San Marcos, Texas, which released Sons of Fathers in 2011 and Burning Days in 2013, both produced by Lloyd Maines, before the pair split in 2014. His solo debut My Gospel arrived in 2016 on Lightning Rod Records, reached the US country albums chart and was named one of Rolling Stone's best country records of that year. The Have Mercy EP followed in 2018, the same year he made his Grand Ole Opry debut as a solo artist, and Room 41 came in 2019. Country Coming Down was released through Thirty Tigers in 2022, and Book of Paul, his fifth album, arrived in April 2026; Cauthen co-wrote twelve of its thirteen tracks and played bass and drums on several, moving between brash uptempo material such as Texas Swagger and quieter, self-examining songs. His baritone delivery, which earned him the nickname Big Velvet, draws frequent comparisons to Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash. He recorded with Orville Peck as the Unrighteous Brothers for a 2020 Record Store Day release and works regularly with Cody Jinks and the Texas Gentlemen, and his song Everybody Walking This Land was used in the second season of the television series American Gods. He tours steadily through clubs, theaters and festivals across the United States and Canada.
