Mini Trees

indie rock · indietronica

Mini Trees is the indie pop project of Los Angeles songwriter Lexi Vega, who began writing and recording under the name in 2018 after years of playing drums in other people's bands. She grew up in La Cañada in a musical household: her father was the session drummer Carlos Vega, who died when she was five, and her mother sang with the jazz-fusion group Hiroshima. That inheritance, and her Cuban-American and Japanese-American background, run through her writing about identity, belonging and what it means to keep going. Two self-released EPs, Steady Me (2019) and Slip Away (2020), established the project's quiet, drum-forward take on bedroom pop, and she signed to the Boston label Run for Cover Records in April 2021. Her debut full-length, Always in Motion, arrived that September; built around unresolved questions of faith, uncertainty and grief, it opens with "Moments in Between" and closes deliberately without answers on "Otherwise," a decision Vega has explained by saying there is no certainty until we reach the end. The five-song Burn Out EP (2023), made with producer Jon Joseph and featuring Death Cab for Cutie's Zac Rae, pushed toward a more assertive pop sound, and she returned to full-length work with Slow It Down in 2025. Mini Trees has toured with Julien Baker, Death Cab for Cutie, Briston Maroney, Hovvdy, Thao and Deep Sea Diver, playing clubs and small theaters with a full band rather than the solo setup the recordings might suggest.
