Mick McAuley

Mick McAuley is an Irish musician, singer and composer from County Kilkenny who performs traditional and original Irish music on accordion, melodeon, concertina, whistle and guitar. He grew up in a musical family and spent the early 1990s in London, playing with Ron Kavana and with Terry Woods. In 1998 he joined the Irish-American band Solas, replacing accordionist John Williams after the group's second album, Sunny Spells and Scattered Showers; he became one of its longest-serving members, recording and touring nine albums with the band through All These Years (2016). The Boston Herald once called Solas the best Irish traditional band in the world. His solo debut, An Ocean's Breadth, was named best Celtic album of the year by the Washington Post, and Highs and Bellows (2016) collects traditional and original material in a largely acoustic setting. Since 2015 he has worked as a guest musician on Sting's stage musical The Last Ship, and he has recorded and performed with Mary Chapin Carpenter and with Pol Brennan of Clannad, among others. His longest-running partnership is with the Dublin-born guitarist and Solas co-founder John Doyle, with whom he has played for more than three decades and has released a duet album of mostly original compositions. He tours internationally as a solo performer and in duo and trio settings, including a house-concert circuit through Ontario and Quebec on the Home Routes/Chemin Nous network, and he appears in a touring trio with Doyle and the singer Cathie Ryan, an original vocalist with Cherish the Ladies.
