May Be Fern

indie rock · pop rock · rock

May Be Fern is a funk rock band from Denver, Colorado, which describes its own sound as neon funk rock. The group is built around Kate Fern on vocals and bass, Hannah May on keys and vocals and Madi Spillman on guitar, longtime friends who between them claim more than fifty years of performing experience. Their material ranges from older funk to contemporary pop and draws on jazz, blues and rock, and the band declines to pin itself to a single genre. Its debut album, Okay Grandma, Your Turn, won Best Debut Album in Westword's 2024 Best of Denver awards, and 303 Magazine described the record as vast, freeing and effortlessly confident. A second full-length, Three of Swords, followed in September 2025, and the band has also issued an 80s EP. Westword has characterized the group's writing as sonic sorcery, describing a synth-led intro and creeping basslines that place a listener in a different world or time, while 303 Magazine profiled the band among its local rising stars, framing its work around turning music into community. Colorado dates have included the Bluebird Theater, Red Rocks and the 2024 Underground Music Showcase, and the band plays Cervantes' Other Side in Denver. May Be Fern also runs a recurring event billed as Four O' Fern and handles booking only through its own address, having publicly warned that other contacts claiming to represent the band are not affiliated with it.
