Mavis Staples

Mavis Staples is an American gospel, soul and rhythm and blues singer born in Chicago in 1939. She joined her family's group the Staple Singers as a child under her father Roebuck Pops Staples, and the group became a voice of the civil rights movement before crossing over to pop success. Her solo career began with a self-titled 1969 album and has since brought multiple Grammy Awards and a Kennedy Center Honor.
