Margo Cilker

alternative country · country folk

Margo Cilker is an American Americana and country songwriter based in Goldendale, Washington, in the Columbia River country of the Pacific Northwest. She was born around 1993 and raised in California's Santa Clara Valley, and spent years moving before settling: stints in South Carolina, the Basque Country of Spain, and eastern Oregon, where she and her husband Forrest VanTuyl, a songwriter and working cowboy, lived on a ranch near Enterprise before relocating to Goldendale in 2021 to balance agricultural work with touring. Her debut album, Pohorylle, was produced by Sera Cahoone and recorded with players associated with the Decemberists, Band of Horses and Beirut, among them keyboardist Jenny Conlee. Released by the Portland label Fluff & Gravy in 2021, it drew comparisons to Lucinda Williams and was nominated for International Album of the Year at the UK Americana Awards. Cahoone and most of the same band returned for Valley of Heart's Delight (2023), an eleven-song record about family, inheritance and landscape whose title is the old name for the Santa Clara Valley before its orchards gave way to development; Northwest traditionalist Caleb Klauder appears on it, and NPR Music placed it among its fifty best albums of the year. Her third album, Little White Cross, is due October 9, 2026 on Fossil Records, the label co-founded by Avery Hellman of ISMAY. It was made in Lockhart, Texas with producer Bruce Robison and mixes originals with covers, including a title track written by her friend Christy Hays; Cilker has described it, half-seriously, as a concept record whose concept is that she got sad and went to Texas. She has played Pickathon, Treefort and End of the Road, and has toured supporting American Aquarium, Hayes Carll, Drive-By Truckers and Joshua Ray Walker.
