Mama Said String Band is a four-piece bluegrass group based in Louisville, Kentucky, which debuted in 2016. The lineup is Katie Caudill, who performs as Katie Didit, on double bass, guitar and vocals, David O'Neal on fiddle and vocals, Kaitlen Farmer on guitar and vocals, and Kris Potts on mandolin. The band's own description places the emphasis on vocal harmony and contemporary instrumentation rather than strict traditional form, and alongside bluegrass it draws on folk, classical, jazz and Americana; it bills its writing as honest and broadly relatable. The group has been recognised repeatedly in its home state, taking Album of the Year at the 2020 Lexington Music Awards, Best Bluegrass Band at the 2021 Appalachian Arts and Entertainment Awards, and Bluegrass Artist of the Year at the Lexington Music Awards in both 2024 and 2025. Its most recent record, Two Halves, was released in August 2026; it was produced and engineered by Anne Gauthier at La La Land Studios and mastered by Jessica Thompson, with cellist Jake Reber guesting. The band tours out of Kentucky across the eastern United States and works festival billings alongside club dates.
