Malcolm Todd is an American singer, songwriter and producer from Los Angeles whose work blends indie pop with alternative R&B. Born Malcolm Todd Hobert on September 15, 2003, he grew up in Pacific Palisades and attended Palisades Charter High School. His father, Tim Hobert, is a television writer and co-executive producer on The Middle; his mother, who performed in musical theater, introduced him to Broadway scores and Stevie Wonder, while his father's listening ran to the Grateful Dead and James Taylor. He was given a bass guitar at 16 and taught himself to play during the COVID-19 pandemic, later switching to acoustic guitar and making his first EP, Demos Before Prom (2022), with his friend Charlie Ziman. After graduating he had enrolled to study music production at the University of Oregon but withdrew a week before classes started, working at a Cold Stone Creamery while recording. "Art House" and "Roommates" spread on TikTok in 2023, and he played his live debut that July at a sold-out show in Venice, Los Angeles. The EP Shower Shoes (2023) and the mixtape Sweet Boy (2024) followed, along with an opening slot on Omar Apollo's God Said No world tour. Signed to Columbia Records, Todd released his self-titled debut studio album in April 2025; it reached No. 49 on the Billboard 200 and produced "Chest Pain (I Love)," his first Hot 100 entry, at No. 68. The 2024 track "Earrings" became a sleeper hit and climbed to No. 20. His second album, Do That Again, recorded over six months at Electric Lady Studios in New York and Chaplin Studios in Los Angeles, arrived on June 5, 2026 and debuted at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 with about 67,000 equivalent units, his highest chart placement. He cites Steve Lacy, Omar Apollo, Dominic Fike and Ryan Beatty as touchstones and is known for unusual chord voicings. His sister, Audrey Hobert, is also a songwriter.
