Magoo

Magoo is a progressive bluegrass and jamgrass quartet based in Denver, Colorado. The band came together in the fall of 2022 and played its first show in March 2023, initially as a trio of dobro player Dylan Flynn, guitarist Erik Hill and bassist Paul Flynn, who had met through a bluegrass subreddit. Mandolinist Courtlyn Bills joined in the fall of 2023 after meeting the group at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, moving from Texas to Colorado to do it, and A. Denton Turner later took over on upright bass. All four sing, and the group builds its sound on three-part harmony, extended improvisation and modern arrangements of traditional forms. Its members have done well on the Colorado contest circuit: at RockyGrass in 2024 Flynn won the dobro competition and Hill placed second in the flatpicking guitar competition, while the band took first at the UllrGrass band competition in Golden, won the Clash of the Strings battle, and placed second in the Telluride Bluegrass Festival band competition. Festival appearances include WinterWonderGrass, RapidGrass, the Grand Lake Folk Festival and the Huck Finn Jubilee, and the quartet sold out a headlining show at Denver's Globe Hall on November 1, 2024, before it had released a record. Its debut album, What A Life, arrived on February 27, 2026. The ten-track record was preceded by the singles Riding Trains in October 2025 and Angel of Telluride in November 2025, the latter featuring Sam Bush on fiddle and harmony vocals, and was mastered by two-time Grammy winner David Glasser at Airshow Mastering. Several tracks run past seven minutes, among them Big Fall, Riding Trains and The Road, reflecting the improvisational side of the live show. The band's 2026 touring has combined headline dates and festival sets with support slots for Shadowgrass and Kitchen Dwellers.
