Madeleine Roger is a folk singer-songwriter from Winnipeg, Manitoba, whose writing sits at the meeting point of contemporary folk, roots and Americana. She first drew national attention as half of Roger Roger, the sibling duo she formed with her twin brother Lucas; their album Fairweather reached number one on Canada's national folk, roots and blues chart. When Lucas stepped away from writing and performing to work as a luthier, Roger continued on her own, releasing her debut solo album Cottonwood on October 26, 2018. Cottonwood brought a Western Canadian Music Award nomination for Producer of the Year in 2019 and a Canadian Folk Music Award nomination for English Songwriter of the Year in 2020, and drew comparisons between her voice and a young Joni Mitchell. Her second solo album, Nerve, followed on August 30, 2024 through Winnipeg's Birthday Cake Records. It was produced by Josh Kaufman, known for his work with Bonny Light Horseman, Anais Mitchell and Bob Weir, and cut in four days at the Isokon studio in Kingston, New York with engineer D. James Goodwin and assistant engineer Gillian Pelkonen. Its ten songs draw on the end of a long relationship with a musical collaborator, the death of a close friend, an unrequited love and months spent caring for a dying grandparent. The players include JT Bates on drums, Julian Bradford on bass and Elise Boeur on fiddle. Roger works regularly with the Juno-winning string quartet the Fretless, serving as featured vocalist and co-writer on their 2024 album Glasswing. She won the Kerrville New Folk song competition in 2025. On stage she performs largely alone on acoustic guitar in a range of open tunings, and has toured Canada, the United States, Europe and the UK, with appearances at the Winnipeg Folk Festival, Wintergrass, the Stan Rogers Folk Festival, Vancouver Island MusicFest and the Shetland Folk Festival.
