Machinedrum is the project of the American electronic producer Travis Stewart, born in Eden, North Carolina in 1982. He grew up around instruments belonging to his parents and grandparents, including a pedal-steel-playing grandfather, and moved from marching snare and djembe into electronic production in his early teens, adopting the Machinedrum name in his last two years of high school. His debut album, Now You Know, was released on the Merck label in 2001, when he was nineteen. He has since recorded for Planet Mu, Ninja Tune, LuckyMe and his own IAMSIAM imprint, working across IDM, footwork, drum and bass, jungle, house and glitch hop. Room(s), released by Planet Mu in 2011, was among the records that carried Chicago footwork rhythms to a wider electronic audience; Vapor City followed on Ninja Tune in 2013, built around a recurring dream of an imagined city, with Human Energy in 2016 and the guest-heavy A View of U in 2020. Recent releases include the Tstewart album Elysian in 2022, 3FOR82 in 2024, a record drawing explicitly on the music of his birth year, its companion 3FOR82_D3LUX3, the remix set 3RMX82 in 2025, and the six-track mini-album BL00MS in June 2026, his first purely instrumental Machinedrum release in some years and the relaunch of IAMSIAM. He also works in several partnerships: Sepalcure with Praveen Sharma, whose 2011 self-titled album made Pitchfork's albums of the year, JETS with Jimmy Edgar, which released Zoospa in 2019, and Dream Continuum with Om Unit. He has produced for Azealia Banks, and his track She Died There appeared on the FlyLo FM station in Grand Theft Auto V. On tour he plays extended DJ sets, often three hours or longer, accompanied by visuals he makes himself.
