Lusine

Lusine is the recording name of Jeff Michael McIlwain, an electronic producer born in Dallas, Texas and based in Seattle, Washington, working across ambient, IDM and adjacent styles. He enrolled at the California Institute of the Arts in 1998 to study twentieth-century electronic music and sound design for music and film, and began releasing records the following year under the names L'usine and Lusine ICL, the suffix standing for intercontinental. His earliest recorded appearance is on the various-artists compilation Refurbished Robots: KVRX Local Live Vol. 4 in 1999, and his early work included collaboration with Shad Scott. That early run includes L'usine (1999) on Isophlux, A Pseudo Steady State (2000) on U-Cover, Iron City (2002) and the anthology Condensed (2003) on Hymen, and Language Barrier (2007). He has recorded for Ghostly International since the early 2000s, a run comprising Serial Hodgepodge (2004), Podgelism (2007), A Certain Distance (2009), The Waiting Room (2013), Sensorimotor (2017), Long Light (2023) and Melting Days (2026), alongside the singles collection Lucky Numbers: The Ghostly International EPs (2010). AllMusic has described his output as moving between downtempo, placid IDM, abstract hip-hop, ambient techno and minimal house. Guest vocalists appear regularly on his later albums, among them Jenn Champion on the 2019 track Not Alone. McIlwain also composes for film, frequently in partnership with David Wingo: the pair co-scored the David Gordon Green features Snow Angels (2007), The Sitter (2011) and Joe (2013), and McIlwain has also worked on Kevin Bray's Linewatch (2008) and Meredith Danluck's State Like Sleep (2018). He appears at The Get Down in Portland, Oregon.
