Lindsay Lou is a singer, songwriter and bandleader based in Nashville, Tennessee, working in bluegrass, folk and Americana. Born Lindsay Rachel Petroff and raised largely in Michigan's Upper Peninsula in a musical family, she studied human biology and Spanish at Michigan State University, where in 2009 she met the musicians who became her band the Flatbellys at an open mic. As Lindsay Lou and the Flatbellys the group released Release Your Shrouds in 2012 and Ionia in 2015, touring nationally out of the Michigan roots scene. She relocated to Nashville in 2015, settling in East Nashville near frequent stage-mates including Billy Strings and Molly Tuttle, and released Southland in 2018, a record that stretched bluegrass instrumentation toward blues, jazz and soul. She is also a founding member of the harmony trio the Sweet Water Warblers with Rachael Davis and May Erlewine, whose album The Dream That Holds This Child appeared in 2020. Queen of Time, her 2023 debut for Kill Rock Stars, was produced by Dave O'Donnell and grew out of a period of personal upheaval, taking a recording of her grandmother's voice as one of its starting points. Her album Bluegrass Women, co-produced with Grammy-winning engineer Shani Gandhi and released in August 2026 on Work of Bart, collects ten songs written by women across the genre's history, among them Ola Belle Reed, Elizabeth Cotten, Kate Wolf, Dorothy Skaggs and Ma Rainey, performed with Molly Tuttle, Sierra Hull, Aoife O'Donovan, Sarah Jarosz, Alison Brown, Laurie Lewis and Phoebe Hunt; the sessions were tracked with the players standing in a circle to keep the arrangements loose. She made her Grand Ole Opry debut on July 31, 2026, during the Opry's centennial year, singing I've Endured, and her Tennessee dates include The Caverns in Pelham.
