Laid Back Country Picker

Laid Back Country Picker is a two-piece band from Fallsburg, in Lawrence County, eastern Kentucky, built around guitarist and singer David Prince, who teaches social studies at Lawrence County High School and was named the state social studies council's Teacher of the Year in 2010, with his wife Teresa Prince on drums and vocals. The name and the persona came from an inside joke: on a Fourth of July trip to Texas, Teresa photographed David in a cowboy hat, he printed the image on T-shirts borrowing the title of a Waylon Jennings song, and the shirts circulated at a Tyler Childers show before any music existed. Prince learned banjo and other acoustic instruments as a boy near Louisa before a neighbour turned him toward rock, and he spent years in the touring band Night Train; he has also played on recordings by Tyler Childers and Rob McNurlin. He taught Childers ninth-grade government, and that connection led to the duo joining Hickman Holler, the label Childers runs, which put out their first release available to stream after years of selling records by PayPal and out of the trunk. The music is largely guitar and drums with bass underneath, mixing 1970s rock playing with honky-tonk and country slide blues; Saving Country Music has likened the act to a cross between Unknown Hinson and the Flat Duo Jets. The album Go West was released on 13 January 2023 and includes LB's Truth, cut at the Down Home Grill in Louisa during a benefit for the Lawrence County Humane Society. Johnny Knoxville played the record on his Outlaw Country satellite radio show and called them his favourite new band. The duo has also issued a limited coloured-vinyl single of Bela Lugosi's Dead, with cover art by Tony Moore.
