jam band · rock · indietronica

Kyle Hollingsworth is an American keyboardist, born March 2, 1968 in Maryland, best known as a member of the Colorado jam band the String Cheese Incident. He studied music at Towson State University with a focus on jazz piano, then moved to Boulder and joined the band in 1996, three years after it formed. He sings and plays electric piano, Hammond organ, clavinet, synthesizer and accordion, and has written or co-written a large share of the group's repertoire, including songs set to lyrics by Robert Hunter. He has said the band's touring life, which he likens to a traveling circus, is itself a source of material. Hollingsworth also leads the touring Kyle Hollingsworth Band and has performed as Kyle Hollingsworth and Friends. His first solo album, Never Odd or Even, appeared in 2004, followed by Then There's Now in 2009, Speed of Life in 2014, 50 in 2018, 2020 in 2020 and All We Are, released August 1, 2025 on SCI Fidelity Records. Outside those projects he formed 3 Foot Icon with Speech and Chief Xcel and has worked with the Mickey Hart Band, the Fiery Furnaces and Everyone Orchestra. His solo sets move between funk, bluegrass, Afrobeat, fusion and straightforward rock, with long improvised passages built off keyboard textures. He is also a committed home brewer, releasing a collaboration IPA in September 2009 and since then organizing beer-themed events and festivals with Colorado breweries, including a brewing-and-skiing tour in Alaska. He lives in Boulder and says many of his musical ideas arrive while biking or paddleboarding.
