Katie Pruitt is an American singer-songwriter, born Katherine Nicole Pruitt on March 4, 1994 in Atlanta, Georgia and based in Nashville, working in Americana, folk and alternative country. She grew up in the Atlanta suburbs in a Catholic family and attended Catholic school, learning her first guitar chords and hymns from her mother, and played open mic nights in Athens, Georgia while at community college before moving to Nashville, where she attended Belmont University on the inaugural Nashville Songwriting Scholarship from the BMI Foundation. She won the Songwriters Hall of Fame's Buddy Holly Prize in 2017 and issued the OurVinyl Live Session EP the following year, when Rolling Stone and NPR both named her an artist to watch. Her debut album Expectations, co-produced with engineer Michael Robinson and released by Rounder Records on February 21, 2020, draws across ten original songs on her experience growing up queer in the Christian South; it was nominated for the Grammy for Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical, and she was nominated for Emerging Act of the Year at the Americana Music Honors and Awards. A second album, Mantras, followed on Rounder on April 5, 2024, recorded at The Shed in Nashville with producers Jake Finch and Collin Pastore and preceded by the singles Blood Related, White Lies, White Jesus and You, All My Friends and Worst Case Scenario; a deluxe edition in February 2025 added collaborations with S.G. Goodman and Ruston Kelly. A third album, Fools for the Fleeting, is due in September 2026, trailed by the single Blackout. Pruitt has played the Newport Folk Festival and taped an episode of The Caverns Sessions for PBS, performs as a guitarist and vocalist, and cites Brandi Carlile as a central influence.
