Karina Rykman

Karina Rykman is a New York City bassist, singer and songwriter working across the jam and indie rock scenes. Born Karina Rajchman and raised on Manhattan's Upper West Side, the daughter of philosopher John Rajchman and granddaughter of the computer scientist Jan A. Rajchman, she attended the Calhoun School and graduated from NYU's Gallatin School of Individualized Study in 2016. She started her first band, False Arrest, at thirteen and was playing downtown rooms such as the Knitting Factory and Don Hills while still in her teens. In 2016 she joined keyboardist Marco Benevento's band as bassist, a job she has held since, and she has also performed with Vulfpeck, Dispatch and The Claypool Lennon Delirium and sat in with the 8G Band on NBC's Late Night with Seth Meyers. Her own trio pairs her bass and vocals with Adam November on guitar, loopers and effects and Chris Corsico on drums. After a first single, Plants, in 2019, her debut album Joyride was released in August 2023, produced with Gabe Monro and co-produced by Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio, who also plays guitar on five of its tracks; the two had reconnected at the Peach Music Festival in 2021 and recorded at Anastasio's Vermont studio, the Barn. Rykman has since worked as both headliner and support act, opening for Khruangbin, My Morning Jacket and Tedeschi Trucks Band and playing festivals including Bonnaroo, Peach and Sweetwater 420 Fest. A second album, Late Checkout, is announced for release on September 25. Her touring calendar takes in Northeast rooms such as Ardmore Music Hall outside Philadelphia.
