Joshua Ray Walker is a Dallas, Texas country and Americana singer-songwriter known for character-driven storytelling set to pedal steel, fiddle and guitar. He came up through the Dallas club circuit and released a trilogy of albums that established him: the debut Wish You Were Here in 2019, Glad You Made It in 2020, which Rolling Stone named among the year's best country releases, and See You Next Time in 2021. In August 2023 he changed course with What Is It Even?, released through Soundly Music, an album of eleven songs made famous by women, among them Lizzo, Whitney Houston, Cher, Sinead O'Connor, Dolly Parton, Beyonce, Regina Spektor, The Cranberries and LeAnn Rimes, rebuilt in his own twangy arrangements. Walker was diagnosed with cancer soon afterward and underwent lung surgery; he has since said scans show no discernible disease, though he will not be formally in remission for several more years. He worked through and after treatment on a second trio of records, the Jimmy Buffett-inflected Tropicana and the conceptual Stuff, both in 2025, and Ain't Dead Yet on May 29, 2026, which he has described as his most autobiographical album. That period also brought a house nearly lost to flood and mold damage and a scare over the ownership of his catalog. His longtime collaborator is producer John Pedigo, and the recent work was tracked in Dallas at Audio Dallas, Modern Electric and Pedigo's home studio. Early releases came through State Fair Records, whose late co-founder Trey Johnson was a mentor; current material is issued on East Dallas Records with distribution by Thirty Tigers. His writing has moved from third-person portraits of flawed characters toward first-person accounts of illness, mortality and what a life is worth.
