Johnny Folsom 4 is a Johnny Cash tribute band based in Raleigh, North Carolina that has played several hundred shows across the country over roughly fifteen years. The group is fronted by David Burney, whose southern baritone carries the Cash catalogue, with David Gresham on guitar covering the Luther Perkins and Carl Perkins parts, Steve Grothmann on bass and Randy Benefield on drums; the rhythm section is built around the freight-train boom-chicka-boom cadence that defined the Tennessee Two and Three. The set is deliberately career-spanning, running from the early Sun Records sides through the hits, including A Boy Named Sue and Ring of Fire, into the late-period American Recordings material such as Rusty Cage, with spoken stories from Cash's life between songs. The band works theatres and amphitheatres across the South, Northeast, Mid-Atlantic and Midwest, including sold-out nights at the 1,500-seat Lincoln Amphitheatre in Indiana and the 1,000-seat Carolina Theatre in Durham, the Collins Theatre in Paragould, Arkansas, the Murphy Theatre near Cincinnati, the State Theatre in Falls Church, Virginia, Daryl Hall's Daryl's House in Pawling, New York, and City Winery rooms in Nashville, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. They played the Riverbend Festival in Chattanooga in 2011 and headlined the North Carolina State Fair in Raleigh in 2016. The roots magazine No Depression likened the show to a time machine for anyone who never saw Cash perform, David Menconi of the News and Observer called the group a peerless Cash tribute, and Cash's niece Jackie has said Burney captures her uncle's voice.
