Johnny Blue Skies is the recording alias of country and Americana singer-songwriter Sturgill Simpson, who tours with a band billed as the Dark Clouds. Simpson adopted the name full-time in 2024, citing his discomfort with the celebrity that followed records such as Metamodern Sounds in Country Music and A Sailor's Guide to Earth, and has said he intends to release all future albums under it; the phrase had already surfaced as the production company behind his Sound & Fury film and as an easter egg in earlier album artwork. The first Johnny Blue Skies album, Passage du Desir, appeared in 2024. Its follow-up, Mutiny After Midnight, is the first record credited to Johnny Blue Skies & the Dark Clouds. Simpson produced it himself at Easy Eye Sound in Nashville, writing the songs on the spot, and released it on his own High Top Mountain label with Atlantic Outpost. He posted it to YouTube on March 1, 2026, ahead of a physical-only release on March 13, and it reached streaming services months later in an expanded edition with three bonus tracks. It debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 and topped Billboard's Americana/Folk Albums and Top Rock and Alternative Albums charts. Reviewers have described the record as leaning into funk, disco and country rock, and Simpson has framed it as a protest against oppression delivered through hedonistic dance music. The Dark Clouds are credited on the sleeve under nicknames, and press coverage identifies them as guitarist Laur Joamets, bassist Kevin Black, drummer Miles Miller and keyboardist and saxophonist Robbie Crowell, all longtime Simpson collaborators. The project is supported by a 29-date North American arena tour in September and October 2026, opening in Austin and closing in Lexington, Kentucky.
