John PayCheck and The Cavalry Band

John PayCheck is an American country singer-songwriter, born in 1976 in Nashville, Tennessee, who tours with a backing group billed as The Cavalry. He is the son of country singer and Grand Ole Opry member Johnny Paycheck, and got his start on the road as a roadie on his father's crew. After his father's death in 2003, and prompted by the September 11 attacks, he stepped away from music for roughly two decades, working in computer science and as a small-town firefighter before becoming a US Army aviator; he deployed to Afghanistan and continues to serve as an Army Reserve officer stationed in Europe. He returned to performing at the encouragement of other country legacy artists, and his first single, Lone Stars, charted on Music Row. His debut album We All Have a Story followed in 2021, drawing on 1990s country with a strong classic-country undercurrent, and his second, More Days Behind, arrived in November 2024 and was named among Saving Country Music's essential albums of that year. He was nominated for the Academy of Western Artists award for Country Album of the Year and appeared as a guest at the Grand Ole Opry in May 2024. His touring catalogue includes Honky-Tonk Blackout, Montana and Outlaw's Son. He names Hank Williams, George Strait and Bob Wills as touchstones, and the live show leans on honky-tonk and Western swing rhythms rather than contemporary country production. He is a member of the Country Music Association, writes as a BMI affiliate, and is booked through The Kirby Organization.
