Johanna Samuels

Johanna Samuels is a singer-songwriter working in folk and indie pop. Born in New York City and based in Los Angeles, she has been releasing music since 2007 and draws on 1970s and 1980s American songwriting, citing The Band, Gene Clark and Tom Petty among her reference points. Her first album, Double Bind, appeared in 2013, followed by the EPs Home & Dry: Told a Lie (2016) and Have a Good One (2019). Excelsior! (2021) was produced by Sam Evian, and Bystander (2023), produced by Josh Kaufman, came out on Jealous Butcher Records; the EPs Scam Likely (2022) and First and the Last (2024) sit between them. Sorry, Kid was released on 14 August 2026 by Odd Man Out Recordings and Jealous Butcher. Recorded to tape by Jonathan Rado, whose production credits include Weyes Blood, Father John Misty and The Killers, at his Dreamstar II studio, with additional production, mixing and mastering by Patrick Damphier, the eleven-song album gathers material written as far back as 2007 and is framed by Samuels as an address to her younger self, part apology and part recognition. Its singles include White Limousine, Circles and Two People and the Moon, and the closing title track is billed as Grade Eleven (Sorry, Kid). Guests are drawn from her Los Angeles circle and include Courtney Marie Andrews, Erin Rae and Tyler Ballgame. Samuels has toured and recorded with Madison Cunningham, Guster, Faye Webster, Bonny Light Horseman, Anaïs Mitchell and Haley Heynderickx, and in 2024 she formed the band Lomaland with Ballgame.
