Jody Engstrom

Jody Engstrom is a Montana-based Americana and bluegrass singer and acoustic bassist who leads Jody and The Woodflowers, a family band with her husband Marcus Engstrom. She grew up in Townsend, Montana, the daughter of instrument makers, and started on mandolin and fiddle at thirteen before moving to guitar to accompany her singing. Her professional career began in 2008 with Little Jane and the Pistol Whips; she stepped back in 2010 after becoming a mother, then joined Jawbone Railroad in 2011, where she took up the upright bass that has since become her main instrument. She has also sung and played with the Acony Belles and Honey and Rye. Marcus Engstrom, who is Swedish, met her in high school in Montana while apprenticing as a luthier under her father. He too began at thirteen, taking up classical guitar and instrument repair, and later added rock and blues on electric guitar as well as Swedish folk fiddle; he returned to Sweden before the two reconnected in 2005, married and settled in Montana. In the Woodflowers he plays acoustic guitar and Telecaster, and his earlier bands include Twang, Montana Rose, Little Jane and the Pistol Whips and Honey and Rye. Their daughter Ariana joins on fiddle from time to time. The band's repertoire mixes ballads, early American country harmony singing, love songs and fiddle instrumentals, with Alison Krauss and Gillian Welch among its stated touchstones. Much of the group's work is in intimate settings, including weddings and dinners, alongside club and listening-room dates in southwest Montana.
