HuDost is an American folk and Americana duo of Moksha Sommer and Jemal Wade Hines, based in Morgantown, Kentucky. The two met in 2000 at a Rumi festival in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, hosted by Turkish Sufis, where Hines was playing frame drum when he first heard Sommer sing, and they have since built a partnership spanning marriage, parenthood, activism and roughly two decades of touring across the United States, Canada and Europe. Sommer, originally from Montreal, trained in classical, Sufi, Balkan and Middle Eastern music; Hines came up through rock, funk and world music. Their arrangements combine vocals, harmonium, bouzouki, frame drum and other percussion with Nord keyboards, guitars, a Dulcinet and live looping, and their songs borrow from Bulgarian, Macedonian and Croatian folk as well as Farsi, Turkish and Arabic sources. Albums include Of Water + Mercy (2019), Anthems of Home (2020), written and recorded during pandemic isolation, and The Monkey in the Crown, released in February 2025 to mark the band's twentieth year. The 2025 record features drummer Chris Powell and the string duo SistaStrings, both of whom also play with Brandi Carlile, along with members of Jars of Clay. Over their career the duo has worked with producers Malcolm Burn, Oz Fritz and Vance Powell, and has collaborated with Ani DiFranco, Philip Glass and Jon Anderson. Their releases have reached number four on the Canadian national folk and roots chart and number 24 on Billboard's folk and Americana sales chart, and they have won an Independent Music Award for Social Action Song and two Best of Nashville awards in 2020. Both serve as congressional district leaders for the anti-poverty organization ONE and have supported Blood:Water and Love Hope Strength.
