Here Come the Mummies is an American funk band formed in Nashville in 2000 whose members perform in full mummy costume under aliases and keep their identities concealed. The band's own account holds that they are five-thousand-year-old Egyptian mummies raised to play funk; the more commonly repeated explanation is that its members are working Nashville session players, some of them reportedly Grammy winners, whose existing recording contracts make anonymity necessary. The group generally works as an eight- or nine-piece with a full horn section, its stage aliases including Mummy Cass on guitar, Eddie Mummy on drums, K.W. TuT on bass, Spaz on keys, Midnight Mummy on baritone and tenor saxophone, keys and talk box, Dr. Yo and Highlander on saxophones, and H-POD, the High Priest of Death, on trumpet. The music draws on funk, R&B, jazz, soul, ska and reggae, with Otis Redding, Sly and the Family Stone and Kool & the Gang among the reference points, and lyrics that lean heavily on innuendo. The debut album, Terrifying Funk From Beyond the Grave, appeared in 2002, and the catalog has grown steadily since, including HOUSE PARTY in 2022; the song Dirty Minds has turned up in television and in the film Fired Up! Live, the band plays long, horn-driven sets in theatres and clubs across North America, and has opened for P-Funk, Al Green and Cheap Trick, performed at the Super Bowl Village, and appeared on Fox & Friends, PBS's Front and Center, the Bob & Tom Show and That's My Jam.
