HENGE
electronic rock · dance · alternative rock
HENGE is a British band formed in Manchester in 2015 that plays a mix of electronic rock, psychedelic funk and space rock it calls cosmic dross. Its members perform in costume as extraterrestrial characters who claim to have come to Earth to deliver music: Matthew Whitaker as Zpor on vocals and guitar, Pete Turner as Goo on bass and synth bass, Roy Medhurst as Sol, formerly Grok, on synthesizers, and Sam Draper as Nom on drums. The music draws on acid rock, art rock, prog, synthwave and rave, held together by dance tempos and an ecological science-fiction narrative that runs through the songs. The debut EP Cosmic Dross appeared in 2017 on the band's own Cosmic Dross Records; its five tracks, among them Unit of Power, Humans and The Great Venusian Apocalypse, sketch a story of human evolution and environmental collapse. The full-length Attention Earth! followed in 2018, with Alpha Test 4 in 2023 and Journey to Voltus B in 2025. HENGE won Live Act of the Year at the 2018 Independent Festival Awards in Sheffield, and the video for New Planet took a silver award at the 2022 Tokyo Film Awards. The group has extended the concept past the records, working with comic artist Boo Cook, known for the British weekly 2000 AD, on a comic series begun in 2019. Live, the band works with costume, projected visuals and sustained dance rhythms rather than conventional rock staging, and it built its reputation largely on British festival appearances before touring North America intermittently, playing rooms such as Cervantes' Masterpiece Ballroom in Denver.
