Hannah Harper is an American country and bluegrass singer, born November 19, 1999 in Bunker, Missouri and living in Willow Springs, Missouri. She began singing at nine and spent seven years touring with her family's bluegrass group, The Harper Collective, which won the SPBGMA International Band Contest in 2010 and recorded two albums. She stepped back from performing to raise three sons with her husband, Devon Mendenhall, whom she married in April 2018. Harper returned with String Cheese in May 2025, a song she has said addresses her experience of postpartum depression and finding footing through faith and motherhood. In 2026 she won the twenty-fourth season of American Idol, announced on May 11, becoming the first female country singer to take the title since Carrie Underwood in season four; the prize included 250,000 dollars and a recording contract with Hollywood Records. Her coronation song was a version of Chris Tomlin's At the Cross (Love Ran Red), and across the season she performed country, gospel, pop and rock material alongside her own writing. Her post-Idol single, Married Into This Town, was issued through 19 Recordings and Atlantic Outpost and keeps the family band at its center: her brother Dillon Harper produced and played bass, programming and mandolin, her brother Dalton Harper played acoustic guitar, and Dillon and his wife Makeena sang backing vocals. She has cited bluegrass and gospel as her foundation and names Shania Twain and Jo Dee Messina among her influences. Harper has spent the months since the finale on the road with her family band, mixing headline dates with festival and amphitheater slots and a run supporting Brad Paisley.
