Grupo Duelo

Duelo, also billed as Grupo Duelo, is a norteno and Tejano band from Roma, Texas, in the Rio Grande Valley, founded in the late 1990s by vocalist Oscar Ivan Trevino and accordionist Dimas Lopez under the name Duelo Norteno. The group recorded independently at first and adopted the shortened name around 2002, when it signed with Fonovisa Records; it moved to La Bonita Music after 2011 and has continued to release on that imprint. Its style is often described as norteno regiomontano, built on accordion and bajo sexto, and Billboard has characterized its songs as centered on young romance and optimism rather than the corrido tradition. The band has released more than twenty studio albums, among them Desde Hoy (2003), Relaciones Conflictivas (2006), Historias de Valientes (2008), Necesito Mas de Ti (2009), Solamente Tu (2010) and Mi Realidad (2024). Necesito Mas de Ti and Solamente Tu each debuted at number one on Billboard's Top Latin Albums chart and also topped the Regional Mexican Albums chart, marking the group's commercial peak at the end of the 2000s. Duelo received a Billboard Latin Music Award nomination for regional Mexican album of the year in 2004 and another in 2007 for the song Te Compro. Alongside Trevino on lead vocals and bajo sexto and Dimas Lopez Jr. on accordion, the current touring band includes Pedro Flores on bass, Jose Francisco Hernandez on bajo sexto, Ivan Torres on drums, David Badillo on guiro and Andy Pruneda on percussion. In February 2024 the group was involved in a road accident after a concert that injured several members; it has since resumed touring in Texas and beyond.
