GORILLAZ

alternative rock · hip hop · electro

Gorillaz is an English virtual band formed in London in 1998 by Blur frontman Damon Albarn and comic artist Jamie Hewlett, who had met in 1990 and were sharing a flat when they conceived the project while watching MTV. The music is credited to four fictional animated members: singer and keyboard player 2-D, whose voice is Albarn's, bassist Murdoc Niccals, guitarist Noodle, and drummer Russel Hobbs, voiced by Remi Kabaka Jr., who later became a working percussionist and producer within the group. Their 2001 self-titled debut reached number three in the United Kingdom and went triple platinum there on the strength of Clint Eastwood, featuring Del the Funky Homosapien. Demon Days (2005) topped the UK chart, sold six times platinum in Britain and double platinum in the United States, and produced Feel Good Inc., which spent eight weeks atop the Billboard Alternative Songs chart and won the Grammy Award for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals. Later albums include Plastic Beach (2010), the iPad-recorded The Fall (2010), Humanz (2017), The Now Now (2018), the episodic Song Machine, Season One: Strange Timez (2020) and Cracker Island (2023), with The Mountain announced for 2026. The catalog is built around guest features, among them De La Soul, Snoop Dogg, Lou Reed, Bobby Womack, Mos Def, Little Dragon, Beck, Thundercat, Stevie Nicks, Bad Bunny and Robert Smith, and moves between hip hop, dub, electronic, rock and pop. The live presentation has changed over time: early tours hid the musicians behind a screen carrying Hewlett's animation, the Demon Days concerts in Manchester and at Harlem's Apollo Theater used silhouettes and a large guest cast, and from the Escape to Plastic Beach tour in 2010 onward the band has performed in full view with animation projected behind it. Gorillaz won Best British Group at the 2018 Brit Awards.
