Gogol Bordello is a gypsy-punk band formed in 1999 on New York City's Lower East Side around Ukrainian-born singer and guitarist Eugene Hutz, who named it after the nineteenth-century Ukrainian writer Nikolai Gogol. Its international lineup has always been part of the band's identity; alongside Hutz it currently includes violinist Sergey Ryabtsev, a member since 2000, Ecuadorian percussionist and MC Pedro Erazo, drummer Korey Kingston, Brazilian bassist Gill Alexandre and accordionist Erica Mancini. The group sets Romani and Eastern European folk melodies, carried by violin and accordion, against punk guitars, dub and cabaret theatrics, and has built its standing on relentless touring and stage shows that treat the audience as part of the performance. The studio albums run from Voi-La Intruder (1999) and Multi Kontra Culti vs. Irony (2002) through the breakthrough Gypsy Punks: Underdog World Strike (2005) and Super Taranta! (2007), the Rick Rubin-produced Trans-Continental Hustle (2010), Pura Vida Conspiracy (2013), Seekers and Finders (2017), Solidaritine (2022) and We Mean It, Man!, released in February 2026 on Hutz's own Casa Gogol Records. That ninth album was co-produced by Nick Launay and Adam Greenspan, and Hutz has described it as a deliberate return to the punk and post-punk influences that shaped the band's earliest years. Hutz has also worked outside music, co-starring with Elijah Wood in the 2005 film Everything Is Illuminated and appearing in Madonna's Filth and Wisdom. After Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 he organized benefit performances and recorded Man With the Iron Balls with Les Claypool to raise money for the relief organization Nova Ukraine, and Ukrainian solidarity has remained a visible theme of the band's records and shows. The group tours clubs and mid-size halls across North America and Europe.
