Ghalia Volt

Ghalia Volt is a Belgian blues and roots singer, guitarist and songwriter, born Ghalia Vauthier in Brussels, who began by busking on the city's streets. She fronted the rhythm and blues group Ghalia & The Naphtalines and then joined Voodoo Casino, cutting her first album with them in 2016. From 2013 she made extended trips to the United States, busking her way through Chicago, St. Louis, Memphis, Nashville and the Deep South and becoming a regular at the Sunflower River Blues and Gospel Festival in Clarksdale, Mississippi, before basing herself in the American South. She records for the German label Ruf Records. Her debut for the label, Let the Demons Out (2017), was made in New Orleans with Johnny Mastro and Mama's Boys. Mississippi Blend (2019) brought in Cody Dickinson and Cedric Burnside on percussion, guitarist Lightnin' Malcolm and harmonica player Watermelon Slim, and reached number three on Billboard's Top Blues Albums chart. One Woman Band (2021) was cut at Royal Studios in Memphis with co-producer Lawrence 'Boo' Mitchell, bassist Dean Zucchero and guest solos from Monster Mike Welch, and was tracked live rather than multi-tracked, with Volt singing, playing electric slide guitar and working kick drum, snare, hi-hat and tambourine with her feet, an approach she developed during the 2020 pandemic shutdown. Shout Sister Shout followed on Ruf in 2023, recorded at Dave Catching's Rancho de la Luna studio in Joshua Tree, California, with Catching on guitar, drummer Danny Frankel and keyboardist Ben Alleman, pulling desert psychedelia into her blues.
