Geordie Greep

Geordie Greep is an English singer, guitarist and songwriter based in London, born Geordie Wade Greep on 20 August 1999 and best known as the frontman and lead guitarist of the rock band black midi. He met his future bandmates Matt Kwasniewski-Kelvin, Cameron Picton and Morgan Simpson while attending the BRIT School, and the group came up through the Brixton pub the Windmill, the only venue that answered Greep's emails asking for gigs. Signed to Rough Trade Records in 2019, black midi released three studio albums, Schlagenheim, Cavalcade and Hellfire, and became one of the defining acts of the south London Windmill scene before announcing an indefinite hiatus in August 2024. Ten days later Greep announced his debut solo album, The New Sound, with the lead single Holy, Holy. Released by Rough Trade on 4 October 2024, it was recorded between September 2023 and April 2024 across London studios including RAK and the Fish Factory and in Sao Paulo, where Greep worked with Brazilian session players; more than thirty musicians appear on it, though the sessions themselves took only eight or nine days. Two tracks, The Magician and Walk Up, began as black midi songs that never reached a studio album. The record folds progressive rock and jazz-rock together with bossa nova and samba, and its lyrics are satirical character studies of desperate, self-deluding men, written after Greep observed such figures in clubs. It reached number 84 on the UK Albums Chart, carries a Metacritic score of 81 across critics, and appeared on numerous 2024 year-end lists.
