Foy Vance

Foy Vance is a Northern Irish singer-songwriter, born Foy Best Vance in Bangor, County Down on 18 November 1974. His father, a preacher, moved the family to Oklahoma while Vance was very young, and years spent travelling among churches across the American South exposed him to gospel, soul and blues; the family returned to Northern Ireland and settled in Belfast by the time he was about five. He released his debut album Hope on Wurdamouth in 2007 and his second, Joy of Nothing, on Glassnote in 2013; it featured a guest appearance by Bonnie Raitt and won the inaugural Northern Ireland Music Prize. In November 2015 he signed to Ed Sheeran's Gingerbread Man Records, which released The Wild Swan in May 2016, a record that reached No. 28 in the UK, No. 10 in Ireland and No. 87 in Australia. Two Americana-leaning albums followed in 2019: From Muscle Shoals, cut at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, and To Memphis. Signs of Life appeared in September 2021, and The Wake, issued through An Eala Fiain Ltd. and distributed by Concord, in March 2026. Vance co-wrote Pushin' Time with Miranda Lambert and Natalie Hemby, has worked with Kacey Musgraves, and featured on the Illenium single Blood in 2019. In January 2024 he shared a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics with Sheeran and Max Martin for A Beautiful Game, written for the Apple TV+ series Ted Lasso. He has supported Sheeran on UK and US tours, Elton John on European dates in 2016 and Josh Groban that same summer, and toured Britain with Bonnie Raitt in 2013. His songs have been used in television series including Grey's Anatomy and House, and he has performed on Later... with Jools Holland. Onstage he works mainly with voice, guitar and piano, leaning on soul and gospel phrasing as much as on folk.
