Float Like a Buffalo

rock · ska · jam band

Float Like a Buffalo is a six-piece, horn-driven band from Denver, Colorado, formed in 2014 and mixing funk, ska, reggae and rock. The lineup is Cory Pearman on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, James Steinbach on lead guitar, Jason Clukies on bass and backing vocals, Jon Cales on drums and backing vocals, Cory 'Beef' Meier on keys and trombone, and Luke Story on saxophone and trumpet. Its studio releases are the debut album Back From Nowhere in 2019, the Vertigo EP in October 2020, and Day Late, Dollar Short on March 17, 2023. Two live records followed in 2025: one documenting a collaboration with the Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra, and Float Like a Buffalo Live at Dillon Amphitheater, recorded July 14, 2025 while opening for Lotus and issued with no overdubs and two previously unreleased songs. The single Falling Into Yesterday appeared on July 31, 2026. The band has played Red Rocks Amphitheatre, the Gothic Theatre, the Bluebird Theater and Dillon Amphitheater, and festivals including Summer Camp Music Festival, Jazz Aspen Snowmass and Holy Smokes! Music Festival, and it has shared bills with WAR, Lotus, The Motet and Andy Frasco & The U.N. During the 2020 shutdown the group ran the Yard Ahead Tour, playing socially distanced sets in fans' yards with sponsorship from Breckenridge Brewery, and performed distanced shows at Red Rocks. Denver's Westword has named it Best Funk Band, and 303 Magazine has placed it among the state's top rock and multi-genre acts. Live sets are built around the brass section and extended jams, and the band describes its aim as making music that works as an escape for an audience spanning several generations.
