Eliza Gilkyson

Eliza Gilkyson is an American folk and Americana singer-songwriter, born in Hollywood, California on 24 August 1950 and the daughter of songwriter Terry Gilkyson; her brother Tony Gilkyson played guitar in Lone Justice and X. She recorded a first album, Eliza '69, in 1969 while raising a family in Santa Fe, moved to Austin, Texas in 1981, and released records over the following two decades from Austin, Los Angeles and New Mexico, among them Pilgrims on Gold Castle in 1987 and the 1993 collaboration Eolian Minstrel with Andreas Vollenweider. Her most sustained run came at the folk label Red House Records, which issued Hard Times in Babylon in 2000, Lost and Found in 2002, Land of Milk and Honey in 2004, Paradise Hotel in 2005, Beautiful World in 2008, Roses at the End of Time in 2011, The Nocturne Diaries in 2014, Secularia in 2018 and the politically framed 2020 in 2020, alongside the 2010 trio album Red Horse with John Gorka and Lucy Kaplansky. Land of Milk and Honey and The Nocturne Diaries each drew a Grammy nomination, for Best Contemporary Folk Album and Best Folk Album respectively. More recent albums have come out elsewhere: Songs from the River Wind in 2022 on Howling Dog and Home in 2023 and Dark Ages in 2025 on her own Realiza imprint. Her songs have been recorded by Joan Baez, Rosanne Cash, Tom Rush and Bob Geldof, and she has appeared on Austin City Limits, Mountain Stage and NPR and toured with Richard Thompson, Patty Griffin and Mary Chapin Carpenter. She was inducted into the Texas Music Hall of Fame in 2003 and into the Austin Music Hall of Fame, and has won multiple Austin Music Awards and Folk Alliance awards. She relocated to Taos, New Mexico in 2020, where she runs annual songwriting workshops, and continues to tour heavily in the United States and abroad.
