El Tri

El Tri is a Mexican rock band from Mexico City fronted by Alex Lora. It is the continuation of Three Souls in My Mind, which Lora co-founded and which played its first public show in October 1968. That group closed the Festival de Rock y Ruedas de Avandaro in September 1971, the Mexican counterpart to Woodstock, before a crowd reported at more than 300,000, and afterward moved from English-language covers to Spanish-language originals written in the colloquial speech of Mexico City's working-class neighborhoods. In 1984 a dispute with co-founder Carlos Hauptvogel over rights to the old name pushed Lora to adopt El Tri, a contraction fans had already coined from the Three in Three Souls in My Mind. The first album under the new name, Simplemente, became the first Mexican rock record certified gold and produced the hits Triste Cancion de Amor and Vicioso del Rocanrol. The band went on to sell tens of millions of records across Latin America, broke through in Argentina and the rest of South America in the 1990s, and received a Latin Grammy nomination in 2003. Lora successfully defended his ownership of the El Tri trademark in 2017 against Televisa, which had wanted it for World Cup branding. The sound is blues-based rock with hard rock and psychedelic elements, and the lyrics are irreverent and socially critical, which has earned the band descriptions as the grandfathers of Mexican rock and as the country's definitive working-class rock outfit. The current touring group includes Lora's wife Chela Lora, who also manages the band, alongside Rafael Salgado, Lalo Chico, Oscar Zarate, Charlie Valerio, Alejandro Alvarez and Felipe Chacon. Having passed its 55th anniversary, El Tri continues to tour Mexico, the United States and Latin America.
