Doja Cat, born Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini on October 21, 1995 in Tarzana, Los Angeles, is an American rapper, singer, songwriter and record producer. Her mother, Deborah Sawyer, is a Jewish American graphic designer; her father, Dumisani Dlamini, is a South African performer of Zulu descent known for the musical Sarafina!. She spent part of her childhood on an ashram in Agoura Hills, left high school at sixteen, and began uploading home recordings to SoundCloud, where the 2012 track So High led to a deal with Dr. Luke's Kemosabe Records in partnership with RCA when she was seventeen. Her debut album Amala arrived in 2018, the same year the self-produced novelty single Mooo! became a viral hit. Hot Pink (2019) delivered Say So, which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in a remix featuring Nicki Minaj. Planet Her (2021) leaned toward pop and R&B and produced Need to Know and Kiss Me More with SZA, which won the Grammy Award for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. Scarlet (2023) turned back toward rap and yielded Paint the Town Red, a second Hot 100 number one and the first rap song to top the Billboard Global Excl. US chart. Her fifth album, Vie, was released in September 2025, drew on 1980s pop production, and debuted at number four on the Billboard 200 behind the single Jealous Type. She has received nineteen Grammy nominations in total. Her recorded work spans pop rap, dance-pop, trap and R&B, and she is closely identified with elaborate visual concepts in her videos and stage design. Headlining tours include the Amala Tour (2018-2019), The Scarlet Tour (2023-2024) and the Ma Vie World Tour, which ran through 2025 and 2026 and took in her first dates in Australia, New Zealand and Asia.
