Dark City Agent
Dark City Agent is a Denver-based project led by guitarist and producer Robbie DelPrete that pairs rock instrumentation with electronic production, moving between electronica, dance, rock, metal and psychedelia. On record it works as a conventional guitar, bass and drums configuration augmented by modern electronic production, with all three players contributing synthesizers and samples to a largely instrumental sound that reviewers have placed somewhere between Jean Michel Jarre's keyboard writing, Hawkwind's space rock and science-fiction soundtrack scoring. The project issued The Mogami Thief in June 2017 before its debut full-length, The Witching Hour, arrived on 13 September 2019 after roughly four years of work. The twelve-track album includes Pixelator (Cool Guys Don't Look at Explosions), The Fallen City, Le Roux the Mastermind, The Quantum Observatory and F.U.F.R., which features Mary McAvoy, and closes with Blood Moon (Mercury in Powerade). A remix of Odesza's The Last Goodbye followed in July 2024. Alongside club dates, DelPrete has built a series of destination performances staged and filmed in landscape rather than in a venue, each treated as an opportunity to build a world around the music: the first installment was a 75-minute set played through sunset in Golden, Colorado, and the follow-up, On the Edge, was filmed on the red rock cliffs of Moab, Utah and premiered as a community screening at Colorado Sake Co. in Denver. The act plays Denver rooms including Cervantes' Masterpiece Ballroom and sits within the city's underground bass and experimental electronic scene.
