Dan Tyminski

bluegrass · singer-songwriter

Dan Tyminski is an American bluegrass singer, guitarist and mandolin player, born in Rutland, Vermont in June 1967. He came up through the Lonesome River Band and joined Alison Krauss's Union Station in 1992, replacing Tim Stafford; he returned briefly to the Lonesome River Band in 1993 before rejoining Union Station as a permanent member in 1994, where he sang lead and harmony, played guitar and mandolin and contributed songs, among them Another Day, Another Dollar on the 1992 album Every Time You Say Goodbye. He remained with the group until 2025, when he left and Russell Moore of IIIrd Tyme Out took over the guitar chair; Tyminski does not appear on the 2025 Krauss album Arcadia. Outside bluegrass he is known for two vocal features: he supplied the singing voice for Man of Constant Sorrow in the 2000 film O Brother, Where Art Thou?, which won a CMA award and a Grammy for best country collaboration with vocals, and he sang lead on the Swedish producer Avicii's Hey Brother in 2013, a top-five hit in more than fifteen countries that passed a billion Spotify streams in May 2024. He has won fourteen Grammy Awards across solo and collaborative work and received the Bluegrass Heritage Foundation's Bluegrass Star Award in 2021. His solo albums are Carry Me Across the Mountain (Doobie Shea, 2000), Wheels (Rounder, 2008), the rock-leaning Southern Gothic (Mercury Nashville, 2017) and God Fearing Heathen (8 Track Entertainment, 2023), the last of which includes a bluegrass reworking of Hey Brother. More recent work includes the concert album Live From The Ryman, the solo song Smile When You're Alone, co-written with Jimmy Yeary, and collaborations with Kygo on Heaven On Your Mind and with Carly Pearce and Molly Tuttle on What If You Loved Me.
