Cytrus is a psychedelic funk octet from the Seattle area, formed when two Everett, Washington bands merged after sharing a rehearsal space. Guitarist and singer Jared Squires, drummer Trevor Church, saxophonist Brandon Hailey and percussionist Connor Merritt had played together since Glacier Peak High School, latterly as HopSol; bassist Luke Nevills, keyboardist and guitarist Owen Mayo, vocalist and organist Sean Connelly and synthesist Alex Dean came from Bunk Foss. The two groups rehearsed in the same Everett room until a fire-code problem forced them out, and a long joint jam before the move convinced them to combine. The band describes the result as psychedelic powerfunk: eight players built around guitar, saxophone, layered keyboards and group vocals, drawing on 1960s and 1970s rock, soul, disco, hip-hop and psychedelia. Their debut album, Concentrate, appeared in October 2022, its instrumental tracks threaded with film and television monologues. A second, Duality, followed in November 2025; it was tracked with a mix of period and modern instruments and vintage recording techniques, and takes up themes of good and evil, mortality and time. The group has played Northwest and Southwest festivals including Summer Meltdown, Fisherman's Village in Everett, Treefort, Sawtooth Valley Gathering and Joshua Tree Music Festival, and has supported Victor Wooten and the Budos Band. Live, it works in long instrumental stretches, trading solos over horn- and synth-driven grooves, and has sold out rooms such as Seattle's Nectar Lounge. A 2026 touring run carried the band well beyond the Northwest, taking in Boise, Las Vegas and Phoenix and a Colorado debut at Cervantes' Other Side in Denver in September.
