Chuck Ragan

Chuck Ragan is an American singer, songwriter and guitarist, born Charles Allen Ragan on October 30, 1974, the son of PGA Tour golfer Dave Ragan and gospel singer Geraldine Ragan. He is best known as a founding guitarist and vocalist of the Gainesville, Florida punk band Hot Water Music, whose gravel-voiced, twin-guitar sound became a template for melodic hardcore through the late 1990s and early 2000s; the group ended amicably in 2005, reunited in 2007 and released Exister in 2012. Ragan's solo work grew out of Rumbleseat, Hot Water Music's acoustic side project, and turns toward folk and Americana without abandoning the delivery he brought from punk. Feast or Famine appeared in 2007 on SideOneDummy and No Idea, followed by Gold Country (2009) and Covering Ground (2011) on SideOneDummy with his own Ten Four Records, Till Midnight in 2014 with Dine Alone, and Love & Lore in 2024 on Rise Records. He is usually accompanied by Jon Gaunt on fiddle and Joe Ginsberg on bass, an arrangement that gives the solo shows a string-band frame rather than a singer-songwriter one. In 2008 he launched the Revival Tour, an idea he and his wife Jill Ragan had been developing since 2005: a collaborative acoustic package in which performers from punk, folk, bluegrass and alt-country share one stage and back each other rather than playing separate sets. The first run covered 52 shows in 57 days with Tim Barry of Avail and Ben Nichols of Lucero, plus rotating guests including Tom Gabel of Against Me!, and the format has returned repeatedly since. He plays clubs and midsize halls including Slowdown in Omaha and Washington's in Fort Collins.
